LITTLE ROCK’S HISTORY: ARKOPOLIS, ARKANSAS

Many people have inquired about the exhibit title, “Almost Arkopolis” and where the name came from. The story behind it is that we were almost called Arkopolis! Come to our Open House Friday nigth uring the 2nd Friday Art Walk at studio MAIN from 5- 9 to see the exhibit.
The story goes back to the early 1800’s when a trapper named William Lewis brought his family to the area which was known then as the “Point of Rocks” In 1812, set up a homestead and laid claim to the area. William was the first settler in the area of what we know today as Little Rock.
The Southwest Trail
We had a blast this past Saturday at the SoMa annual Mardi Gras Parade! studioMAIN was represented by our crazy razorback/dragon in the parade, manned by the equally crazy James and Page. The studio was also open during the festivities, and had lots of people come through our doors to check out our space and the work on the walls.
The parade was a lot of fun, and brought a lot of people to the neighborhood that never would have come here otherwise. We can’t wait for next year, and with all this time to plan we are going to have an awesome float ready for next year!

Holy Smokes! That was a great opening! Thank you thank you thank you to who everyone who could make it out. We had a great crowd including Mayor Stodala, Dean Jeff Shannon of the Fay Jones School of Architecture, Warwick Sabin of Oxford American, Dean Kumpuris of the Little Rock Board of Directors, UALR professor and artist A.J. Smith ,acclaimed architect Marlon Blackwell, and many many more.
Steve Luoni and Jeff Huber of the University of Arkansas Community Design Center were on-hand to present their latest project, the Pettaway Pocket Neighborhood. This project is a perfect example of a Low Impact Development. Just wanted to share the awesome front door that John Bruhl of UALR, designed and built for us. Sadly when it was torched, it twisted, and now it looks like we won’t be able to install it. It really is beautiful, hopefully someone will have a bright about how to install it.. otherwise it sure is nice to look at!
We all owe a huge hand to David and Allison for their hard work this weekend! They clad the two coffee tables, and one of the conference tables with some of the weathered wood. They have also covered the floor of the back lounge area in a mix of bamboo, weathered, and charred wood. They also started building a basic loft over the space and attached a birdsnest ceiling of charred wood, with a couple homemade mason jar lights. Our group has been wanting to build something like this for awhile, looks like it is a success.. now it is time to upscale it when we have the time!
